Guidelines are the difference between owning a brand and owning some files. We document the whole system: how the logo is used and misused, the colour palette and — the part usually skipped — the rules for how colours relate to each other, the typographic scale and hierarchy, what your photography looks like, how layouts are built, and how the brand sounds when it speaks. We write it to be used rather than admired: short enough that people read it, specific enough that it settles arguments, and full of examples of both correct and incorrect use.
